The whole pub is silent at that very moment. I’m sure everyone is laughing and pointing, just like at school. I’m sure a spotlight has been switched on above me.

I stand abruptly. It’s too much. “I have to go.”

My face is bright red. I flail around, gathering my coat and bag, getting twisted in the strap and drawing further attention.

“I have to go.”

“Julia, wait…” Adam disentangles himself from your grasp. I’m already at the door. “I’ll give you a lift. Wait a second.”

You don’t look up. You lean back in your chair, smirking with satisfaction, and swirl wine around the glass. You know you’ve trounced me, finally and oh so completely, and you didn’t even plan it.

I shake my head, my entire life blurring before me, lurching in a wretched and irrevocable trajectory.

“Julia!”

I’m falling into the freezing night air and running away.

I’m a fifteen-year-old girl, pretending to be grown-up, and failing.
